Who is this course for?
Pupils should be achieving Level 3D by the end of S2 . Pupils who have an interest and are motivated in art and design. Pupils wishing to follow a career in the varied world of the Visual Arts. The course is a broad-based qualification. It is suitable for pu[pils with an interest in art and design, and for those who would like to progress onto higher levels of study. It allows pupils to consolidate and extend their art and design skills.

Tell me some basic information about the course
Units in expressive, design and critical studies develop skills in drawing and media handling, but students must also use their initiative, think creatively and originally, while learning to express themselves as individuals, and tackle solving design problems. The course develops problem solving, critical thinking and reflective practice skills.
In S4 Unit 1. Expressive- starts with drawing developed through the study of the use of a wide range of materials and techniques. Unit 2. -Design units are also based on different areas of study, such as: Graphics, Product design or fashion design. Unit 3.- Critical work involves the study of professional artists and designers. It is usually presented in written form.
What Skills will I develop?
The course provides a broad overview of the subject skills, knowledge and understanding developed in the course: producing analytical drawings and related investigative studies in response to stimuli; using visual elements expressively, showing a clear understanding of the subject matter; producing focused investigative visual and market research for a design activity; skills in using a range of art and design materials, techniques and/or technology creatively; developing and refining a variety of creative ideas for art and design work in 2D and/or 3D formats; describing how artists and designers use materials, techniques and/or technology in their work; analysing the impact of social, cultural and other influences on artists’ and designers’ work and practice; using problem-solving, planning and self-evaluation skills within the creative processSkills in drawing and media handling, think creatively and originally and solving design problems.
How will I be assessed?
All learners must pass the expressive and design practical folios to achieve a course award. The Practical Folio elements are externally assessed and knowledge and understanding of artists and movements (Critical Activity) in an externally assessed question paper.
If I was successful in this course, what qualifications could I go on and study?
Progress to Higher Art and Design or to further study in college or any career that requires practical creative and problem solving skills. Other qualifications in art and design, Further study, Employment and/or training
