Tell me some basic information about the course
The study of Biology covers a very wide range of areas from ecosystems to individual genes, but there are common skills required to study these different areas and communicate the findings. Pupils will be introduced to these skills and techniques through practical and written scenarios. They will also further develop the foundation knowledge for progressing on to the National coursework.
You will find out how Biology is helping to find solutions to world problems. There are 3 units to study: Cell Biology, Multicellular Organisms & Life on Earth. Skills of analytical thinking, problem solving and experimental design will be developed through the coursework. Areas studied include cell structure, DNA, genetic engineering, stem cells, inheritance, lifestyle choices and ecosystems.

How will I be assessed?
The N5 Course Assessment has two components, both marked by the SQA: Exam 100 marks and Assignment 25 marks. The Course assessment is graded A–D. Your grade will depend on the total combined mark for both Course Assessment components. For N4, there is an assessment for each unit, a practical write-up and an assignment to be successfully completed.

If I was successful in this course, what qualifications could I go on and study?
Higher Biology, NPA Applied Science Level 5 or NPA Science Technologies Level 6.
