Tell me some basic information about the course
Through a focus on practical work pupils will explore key areas of Chemistry such as chemical reactions, oil, and metal reactivity. Using the oil and associated industries as a focus, pupils will lead the learning of the class on an aspect of these industries that they have researched. Chemistry is vital to everyday life and allows us to understand and shape the world. There are 3 units to study: Chemical Changes & Structure; Nature's Chemistry & Chemistry in Society. Areas studied include rates of reaction, acids & bases, fossil fuels, biofuels, metal chemistry, fertilisers and environmental monitoring.
What Skills will I develop?
Use of equipment, chemical terminology, experimental design, independent learning, researching and presenting.
How will I be assessed?
"The N5 Course Assessment has two components, both marked by the SQA: Exam 100 marks and Assignment 25 marks. The Course assessment is graded A–D. Your grade will depend on the total combined mark for both Course Assessment components. For N4, there is an assessment for each unit, a practical write-up and an assignment to be successfully completed.
If I was successful in this course, what qualifications could I go on and study?
Higher Chemistry, NPA Applied Science Level 5 or
NPA Science Technologies Level 6.
