This course is for people curious about the issues facing the world, including current global affairs, crime & the law, terrorism and issues threatening democracy and our planet.
What Entry Requirements are there?,
In S2 October tracking, having secured:
Level 02.C - Most benchmarks achieved at L3 or better in Modern Studies
Tell me some basic information about the course
During S3a, students will look at a number of country case studies including India, France, Germany, Brazil and the USA. Within this, students will study different political systems, current affairs and social issues related to these countries. They will then work collaboratively in teams to plan, create and deliver a project on their chosen country, providing an ideal opportunity for inter-disciplinary and co-operative learning.
In S3b, students will become SQA 'candidates', and will study the first unit of National 5 Modern Studies. This will involve learning about crime and the law in the UK; investigating its causes, consequences and the potential solutions. They will move on to study the work of the Scottish Parliament before going on to learn about International Terrorism.
What Skills will I develop?
Analysis, digital literacy, presentation skills, organisation, communication, literacy, time management and creativity. Source handling, evaluation, collaborative learning.
How will I be assessed?
In S3a, assessment is based on the skills, criteria and Benchmarks met in the lesson that will be planned, created and run in teams.
Moving into S4, assessments become more rigorous, as we work towards SQA awards. Assessment at National 5 level is 80% from the exam and 20% from an Assignment - both marked by the SQA. National 4 assessments will also be completed in class and marked internally.
